Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “positive response” to Wylfa Newydd has been welcomed by Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie. The Conservative member of Parliament wrote to the PM to press the case for the nuclear development, citing the economic benefits and also the contribution it can make to the UK’s Net Zero by 2050 target. It comes as a planning decision on the £12bn scheme – shelved in January 2019 – is due before the end of September while talks are stepping up between UK Government and Horizon Nuclear Power and Hitachi over funding. This month he wrote back to the MP, outlining the Government’s commitment to the net zero target for greenhouse gas emissions. He said: “The Government understands the vital role nuclear power currently plays in our energy landscape, providing firm low-carbon power, as well as thousands of employment opportunities and numerous supply chain contracts. “As such, I recognise your desire for driving progress on Wylfa Newydd on behalf of your constituents and all the people of North Wales.”
