Two of the biggest UK energy companies continued to lose customers in recent months, as they came under pressure from rivals and politicians. SSE said on Thursday that it lost a further 230,000 customers in the three months to the end of June, its first quarter, continuing a trend from last year when it leaked 200,000 accounts. Rival ScottishPower, part of Spain’s Iberdrola, also revealed that it ended the first half of the year with 5.3m accounts, down from 5.4m a year earlier. All of the big six UK energy suppliers have come under pressure from “challenger” brands poaching customers with cheaper deals.
