If Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden loses to incumbent US president Donald Trump in November’s general election, the United States’ ability to decarbonise before 2050 will be all but nullified. This is the conclusion of new research from global energy analysts Wood Mackenzie, which claims that “the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election will dictate the pace of decarbonisation for decades.”

The in-service dates for Georgia Power’s Vogtle nuclear plant expansion project remain November 2021 for Unit 3 and November 2022 for Unit 4, Kallanish Energy reports. The company and its partners also reported that the Plant Vogtle project is now 87% complete, as of an Aug. 31 filing with the Georgia Public Service Commission. The report covers the period from Jan. 1 through June 30 in 2020. Several key tests were completed this summer as the plant continues to transition from construction toward system operations, the company said. Recently, the site completed closed vessel testing for Unit 3, which prepares the unit for cold hydro testing ahead of hot functional testing and ultimately the initial fuel load.

The National Nuclear Security Administration says it doesn´t need to do an additional environmental review for Los Alamos National Laboratory before it begins producing key components for the nation´s nuclear arsenal because it has enough information. Watchdog groups are concerned about Tuesday´s announcement, saying the plutonium pit production work will amount to a vast expansion of the lab´s nuclear mission and that more analysis should be done.
