Protesters have said they are taking part in a “mass trespass” at Stonehenge against the Government’s £27 billion roads programme and plans to dig a tunnel near the prehistoric monument. The group, who described themselves as an alliance of local residents, ecologists, activists, archaeologists and pagans, gathered at the Wiltshire site at about noon on Saturday. They are protesting against the Government’s planned £27.4 billion investment in the strategic road network across the country, as well as a controversial £1.7 billion plan to dig a road tunnel near Stonehenge.

More than one in four local authorities involved in the Government’s green roads project has scrapped or reduced schemes, Telegraph analysis has found. Of the 110 councils listed as having participated in Grant Shapps’ “green transport revolution”, 31 made changes including postponing low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), downscaling initial plans or removing entire cycle lanes, sometimes after installing them only weeks earlier. The U-turns came after a backlash from many local residents and businesses who claim the Transport Secretary’s £250 million fund to promote walking and cycling – part of the Government’s £2 billion Active Travel Fund – is deeply flawed.
