Air pollution is costing the average city resident in the UK almost £900 a year in sick days, healthcare and premature death, according to the largest study of its kind by the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA). The health costs caused by three major pollutants – particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide – is felt most keenly in London, where they cost residents £1,180 each on average. In fact, of all 432 European cities studied, London suffered the highest social costs from air pollution. Poor air quality cost the capital more than £10m in 2018, the study found.
