Water company United Utilities yesterday announced a plan to switch its entire operating fleet to green fuels within the next 10 years. United Utilities said it would eliminate diesel-fuelled vehicles in favour of “home-produced energy” within a decade. This will include powering vehicles using electricity generated by the firm’s own solar, wind and hydro installations, and also fuelling vehicles with biodiesel or biogas produced using the firm’s own biodigestion units, United Utilities said. The utility already has four electric vans, 13 other electric vehicles, and two hybrid cars in its fleet, but there are thousands more vans, 4x4s and plant equipment vehicles that will need replacing under the new target.
