The Federal Department of Energy has granted a new drilling authorization to Nagra to search for underground disposal sites for radioactive waste. The National Cooperative Corporation for the Storage of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) can continue its search for underground disposal sites. The Federal Department of Energy (DETEC) granted him a new drilling authorization in Effingen (AG), he said Thursday. Three sites are in the running to store nuclear waste in deep geological layers: the northern Lägern (AG / ZH), the Jura-est (AG) and the north-east Zurich (ZH / TG). The Nagra will choose towards 2022 the sites for which it will request a general authorization for the construction of the depots. The Federal Council will have to decide. Its decision will be submitted to Parliament around 2030 and can be fought by referendum.
