Futurepump is a small but fast-growing company that makes solar irrigation pumps for smallholders in the tropics, from Kenya to Ghana to Papua New Guinea — anywhere, in fact, “where there is sunshine and small farmers”. The company has sold more than 8,000 pumps since 2016 across Africa and Asia and breached $1 million of annual sales in 2019, but that’s a tiny fraction of what Hammond hopes to achieve. Research has suggested that there are 5.4 million farmer customers in sub-Saharan Africa alone who could benefit from solar pumps and about 100 million globally.
