Energy customers who have fallen behind on their bills may have no choice but to have a smart meter installed by debt collection agencies. The Government wants energy suppliers to offer smart meters to all homes by the end of 2025, but they are not mandatory. Customers can turn them down if they would prefer to keep a traditional meter. However, those in arrears claim that energy firms have threatened to fit smart meters without giving them a choice.
