EDF are trying to bamboozle ministers to back a scheme that would pay EDF massive subsidies and premium prices to produce hydrogen that renewable energy would generate for less than half the cost. EDF are scrabbling for PR tricks to obscure the fact that they are asking for a blank cheque from British electricity consumers to fund the proposed Sizewell C plant, on top of which EDF will also be paid a high guaranteed premium price for all of their electricity production.

EDF is looking to implement carbon reduction technology at its Sizewell C nuclear plant, in order to satisfy environmental concerns which threaten to derail the project. The plant’s backer is looking to reduce carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere using surplus power and heat from its proposed Sizewell C nuclear plant. It is one of a number of measures being explored to improve the business case for the £20bn project near Suffolk. It could see electrolysis being used to produce clean-burning hydrogen for use as a low-carbon fuel in industry or to heat homes. Proposals could also involve carbon dioxide being removed from the air using “direct air capture”, an experimental technology to tackle global warming.

THE approval of a new nuclear power plant could bring millions of pounds of investment and new jobs to Warrington, according to one of the town’s MPs. On a recent visit to Bilfinger UK’s Birchwood headquarters, Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols offered her support for the proposed Sizewell C plant on the Suffolk coast. The major infrastructure programme is expected to provide 3.2GW of clean energy, enough to power six million homes, and create 25,000 new jobs and 1,000 apprenticeships across the country, including in the north west.
