A CUMBRIAN nuclear site is set to take part in the development of robotics. The UK and Japan are working together to develop new automated technologies, designed to safely decommission old nuclear sites such as Fukushima. The £12 million partnership will see robotics play an essential part in the time-intensive task of decommissioning nuclear facilities, in a bid to remove risk to human health. Long-reach robotic arms will be used on-site at Sellafield, as well as the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors in Japan, which suffered a nuclear disaster in March 2011 after an earthquake and tsunami destroyed key cooling functions.
