A new consultation quietly asking for comments on Sellafield’s application for a standby diesel generator. This is in addition to the existing Fellside gas plant (built in 1995) and a massive new ‘replacement’ gas plant being built which will not be finished until well into 2025 or beyond. Remember that Sellafield does not produce any electricity – it is a nuclear waste site requiring mega amounts of energy and electricity to “look after” the wastes. The new consultation out today (!) states that “This standby MCP generator will act as a back-up power supply to the Main Site Command Facility providing 100% load back-up in the event of mains power loss. The proposed generator has a capacity of 1656kVA standby power.” No one would begrudge Sellafield a back up generator in case of loss of power on site – but what we do begrudge and what we all should fight against is ever more nuclear waste being produced by new nuclear power plants including so called “Small Modular Reactors” requiring ever more diesel, gas and fossil fuel to “look after” the nuclear wastes.
