A mysterious radioactive cloud that spread around the world in autumn 2017 originated at a nuclear facility in the Urals and most probably involved a fire or explosion, scientists have said. Their report ruled out the Russian explanation that it was caused by the combination of a satellite burning up and a “rather rare meteorological event”. After they released their findings, which were based on weather patterns, the researchers called on Russia to reveal more details of what they said was “unquestionably” a nuclear accident so that the atomic science community could learn lessons.
