SIMEC Atlantis Energy Limited has joined a joint venture (JV) that will develop a large scale tidal power project in Le Raz Blanchard, Normandy. Atlantis will hold a majority stake in the JV, Normandie Hydrolienne. Its partners are the Development Agency for Normandy (AD Normandy) and the regional investment fund, Normandie Participations.

A TIDAL power giant has announced plans to make Alderney territorial waters part of the largest tidal power scheme in the world – a multi-billion euro development which could transform the island’s fortunes. Simec Atlantis, who built and ran the world’s largest tidal energy plant in Scotland, has joined forces with the Region of Normandie to create a public/private venture called Normandie Hydrolienne. At a summit in Edinburgh, they unveiled plans to extract two gigawatts of energy from French and Alderney-owned waters of the fast-flowing Race from more than 800 turbines by 2027.

A pioneering green energy project in the far north of Scotland has become the world’s first fully operational grid-connected tidal power station. The move comes after tidal turbines in the sea off Shetland were integrated with cutting edge battery storage from international tech firm Tesla to enable a predictable supply of renewable energy to be fed into the network. The 300-kilowatt scheme, owned by Edinburgh-based Nova Innovation, has produced 30 megawatt-hours of electricity since going online at the beginning of this month.
