A 2.5MW private-wire PV project in Swindon, Wiltshire, has been energised, providing power to an adjacent recycling centre. Barnfield Solar Farm was developed by Public Power Solutions, a subsidiary of Swindon Borough Council, and will supply electricity to the Swindon Household Waste Recycling Centre’s solid recovered fuel plant. So-called private-wire contracts between solar generators and usually corporate off-takers are expected to become increasingly common in the post-subsidy environment, in which developers are seeking new routes to market for projects. Just last week Solar Power Portal revealed that Lightsource BP, the most prolific developer of UK ground-mount solar assets, has secured a 300MW pipeline of power purchase agreement-backed solar farms.
