A consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation and HICL Infrastructure Company Limited has been provisionally awarded a 20-year contract to own and operate the power cables to the new Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm. The group, calling itself Diamond Transmission Partners, was selected as preferred bidder by Ofgem, the energy regulator, following a competitive tender process. The 32-turbine wind farm, in Liverpool Bay, started generating earlier this year and is capable of producing enough power to meet the needs of 230,000 homes. Its turbines are the biggest in the world, at 195 metres tall, higher than the Gherkin building in London. The wind farm’s developers, a consortium led by Dong Energy, currently own the transmission cable but under Ofgem rules ownership and management of such assets are awarded to a third party once construction is finished. Ofgem said the cable assets for Burbo Bank Extension were estimated to be worth £180.6 million.
