With just two weeks to go to the British parliament election, Renewables UK has welcomed the commitment of the Tory and Labour parties to offshore wind. Hugh McNeal, Chief Executive of Renewable UK, said: “As people will have noticed we are fully into an unexpected election season. The Conservatives published their manifesto last week in which it says: “we will maintain our position as a global leader in offshore wind” if the party is re-elected. “It is encouraging to see such unequivocal support for our industry from the current Government, and in such public form. “Similarly, the Labour Party’s manifesto makes a pledge to increase the UK’s share of renewable energy to 60% by 2030. “In the past seven years under different administrations, we have seen offshore wind capacity in British waters increase fourfold. This impressive growth is set to continue in the short term, but we know our industry plans for the long haul.
