The world’s energy sector is on course to source half its power from wind and solar technologies by 2050, according to a major new outlook published yesterday by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). According to the report, the addition of other renewables such as hydro and tidal power, combined with nuclear, will take the total share of low-carbon electricity in the world power mix to 71 per cent by mid-century, leaving fossil fuels commanding just 29 per cent market share, down from 63 per cent today.
