Allerdale’s GDF Working Group have so far been meeting behind closed doors to consider which parts of Allerdale might like to be a burial site for the nation’s nuclear waste. Cumbria Trust asked to be involved with this, but was refused, under the guise of keeping it ‘small and agile’.Instead they set up a sub group of a sub group of the Working Group and offered us a place on that. Meanwhile the random individual, Andy Ross, the ‘interested party’ who volunteered the whole of Allerdale excluding the national park (where he happens to live) has kept a low profile. Now 12 dates for drop-in events around Allerdale have been advertised, although interestingly they seem to be avoiding holding one in the area which could be the prime target – the area around Silloth and Abbeytown. While these events are being advertised as a chance to discuss and discover more about the search process, in reality the decision on potential search area was made 2 weeks ago. Although the decision will not be in the public domain for the next few weeks.

Copeland GDF Working Group is holding a series of pop-up events over the next few weeks to continue the conversation about geological disposal and what it could mean for Copeland. A Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) is an underground facility designed to safely and securely dispose of higher activity radioactive waste. Members of the community are invited to drop-in and have a chat with the local community engagement team, pick up a leaflet, ask a question or share views. The informal events will take place in different areas of Copeland – limited to small numbers to ensure Covid-safety and will operate within Government guidance. They will be followed by a larger exhibition roadshow which the Working Group plans to run during September.

RWM Annual Review 2020-2021. A year of progress towards delivering a Geological Disposal Facility for UK higher-activity radioactive waste. RWM has made significant steps towards delivering a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for the UK, with the first two Working Groups established to initiate local discussions, and continued research into engineering and technical features ahead of site-specific design activities. The formation of the Working Groups in west Cumbria is one of the key achievements outlined in RWM’s Annual Review 2020-2021 and marks the start of a journey towards finding a willing community, together with a suitable site where a GDF could be safely constructed. The opportunity remains open for individuals and organisations in England and Wales to engage in discussions with RWM, without any commitment required. We anticipate the additional Working Groups will be formed elsewhere in the country over the next year.
