DR GEORGE Hines, who has died aged 82, was a nuclear engineer and a member of the small team that commissioned the fast reactor at the Dounreay plant in Caithness by linking it to the UK’s National Grid in 1962. The livewire link was hailed as a world first, a notable feat for the British team of scientists, engineers and construction staff that had designed, built and were now commissioning the country’s first fast reactor, a type of advanced, but complex, experimental plant that was regarded then as the long-term route for delivering power on a large scale.
