Today, across the globe, it is a day of international celebration. For the first time since the very first nuclear device was exploded in the early hours of 16 July 1945 near Socorro in New Mexico, nuclear weapons became illegal under international law! The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) – the “Ban Treaty” – entered into force today, three years after being negotiated at the UN General Assembly (when it was backed by 122 nations) and 90 days after the 50th country joined the Treaty on 24 October 2020.
