The SNP has had to look to London for support after the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament accused its defence team of going soft on Trident. Scottish CND claimed that the SNP’s defence team has been “sucked into the Westminster bubble” after an allegedly lacklustre response to the UK government’s plan to spend £600 million on Trident renewal. CND head office in London said that the party had “an outstanding track record of opposing Trident” and remained “central to the work of parliamentary CND”. Left-wing nationalists are growing increasingly vocal about what they regard as a shift to the centre-right by the SNP leadership. Jonathon Shafi, the co-founder of Radical Independence, a grassroots movement, claimed that the SNP has been taken over by “neocons” preparing to “sell out on Trident”.
