Scientists building the UK’s first nuclear weapons nearly dropped a test bomb on Dorking. The Surrey market town was nearly blasted into the history books after the Second World War when a plane carrying a nuclear test bomb to a secret facility malfunctioned. According to The Times, the device came loose in the aircraft on its way to Suffolk but luckily it was held by the bomb doors. Pilots then flew over the Thames to dump the bomb in the water, where it remains today.
