The UK government has announced a series of new funding awards designed to support the development of localised smart energy technologies, capable of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing grid security across the UK. Late last week the UK Research and Innovation agency announced the latest round of funding from the £102m Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, dishing out £1.5m to be shared across 12 that are working to design “ground-breaking, local, smart energy systems that are ready for roll out in the 2020s”. The successful funding applicants include an initiative to create an energy marketplace and local trading platform between the predominantly commercial premises around London’s South Bank and Waterloo, which will make use of Internet of Things sensors, predictive algorithms, and storage systems to help curb emissions and costs.
