Ireland’s government is to impose limits on gas emissions by cattle in its battle against climate change. A new climate change bill envisages incentives for farmers to reduce their cattle herds and limit “agricultural emissions”. The majority of these come from “enteric fermentation”, or put simply, cows belching. Farming accounts for about a third of Ireland’s greenhouse emissions — and the country’s roughly seven million cattle are blamed for more than half of that. They cannot digest grass without the help of microbes in their stomachs producing methane gas. This is then burped into the atmosphere.
