Last week the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC), the environmental watchdog, called for a big cut in cattle kept by farmers to offset the expansion of the more profitable dairy sector and ensure Ireland can meet its EU greenhouse gas emissions target for 2030. The announcement was significant, as it is the first time a state body has said what environmentalists have long been arguing: Ireland has too many cows.
