The Irish government has been urged to declare a climate emergency after a UN report warned that more than a tenth of the world’s species face extinction in the next few decades. The research was the most comprehensive assessment of life on Earth conducted. It found that a million animal and plant species were vulnerable to extinction, more than at any time since humans evolved. A spokesman for the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment did not respond to a query about whether Richard Bruton, the environment minister, would declare a climate emergency. He said that the government’s climate plan would be published in the next weeks.
