The Green Investment Group (GIG) is pressing ahead with a scheme to build a new energy-from-waste plant in Grangemouth, Scotland, announcing this week the £210m project has reached financial close. The 21MW Earls Gate Energy Centre (EGEC) will process up to 216,000 tonnes of household, commercial and industrial waste every year, producing electricity and heat that will be bought by local businesses, including by chemical manufacturer and site service provider, CalaChem. The site is GIG’s nineteenth Scottish project, and the firm claims it will make a significant contribution towards cutting the volume of Scottish waste sent to landfill. GIG is headquartered in Edinburgh and owned by Australian bank Macquarie, following its sale by the UK government in 2017.
