The safety case providing the justification for return to service of Reactor 4 has been provided to ONR for their assessment. To support the time ONR will need to complete their assessment process we have adjusted our forecast return to service date for Reactor 4 by to 22 July. The previous date was 24 June. We have now submitted the safety case for Reactor 3 to the ONR for assessment. On the basis of this development we have declared a return to service date for that unit of 1 October 2019. This is a change from 31 July 2019.

EDF Energy, owned by France’s EDF, has extended outages at the two reactors at its Hunterston plant in Scotland, while the nuclear regulator assesses whether it is safe for them restart after cracks were discovered last year. The Hunterston B nuclear plant on the west coast of Scotland is more than 40 years old and when operating can provide enough electricity to power more than 1.7 million homes. It has two reactors and both have been offline since last year after cracks were found on the graphite core during routine inspections at the facility.
