Brexit and the construction of Hinkley Point C are causing a shortage of bin lorry crews in Somerset. Kier, which carries out bin collections across the county, is said to be struggling to recruit permanent staff in light of uncertainly about EU nationals’ right to remain in the UK and competition from the nuclear power plant site. The Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP), which commissions Kier’s services, has said that there are “daily shortfalls” in staff, but said the problem was indicative of national trends. To remedy the situation, new incentives are being offered to drivers, including a £300 recruitment bonus and flexible working hours.
