Renewables jobs ‘to grow fivefold globally by 2050’ as fossil-fuel industry shrinks: study. Employment boom in wind and solar sectors will far outweigh job losses in oil, gas and coal industries, say researchers. Global renewable energy jobs will grow fivefold from 4.4 million today to 22 million by 2050, with more than 85% of those gains in the wind and solar sectors, according to an international team of academics. Jobs in the fossil-fuel sector will, at the same time, fall from 12.6 million to 3.1 million, with about 80% of the job losses related to oil, gas and coal extraction, the researchers write in a study published in the journal One Earth.
