ASN learned in June 2019 of a report concerning a tritium measurement campaign in the Loire published by the Association for the control of radioactivity in the West ( Acro ). This report reported, among a series of 86 measurements, an abnormally high value of 310 Bq / L recorded during a sample taken in Saumur on January 21, 2019. ASN, in conjunction with its technical support, IRSN , carried out various investigations in order to understand the origin of this tritium concentration. The results were the subject of information notes published on the ASN website on June 19 and October 17, 2019. As these investigations did not make it possible to determine the origin of this value, ASN and IRSN decided to carry out an additional measurement campaign, in order to study the possible reproducibility of abnormally high tritium measurements in the Loire at Saumur, in conditions as close as possible to those observed in January 2019 (low water situation in winter).
