ASN considers that the use of a rupture exclusion procedure for the main piping of the primary and secondary circuits of the EPR 2 reactor project is acceptable. This position complements the opinion that ASN issued in 2019 on the safety options for this reactor project. As for the EPR reactor, EDF plans to apply a failure exclusion procedure for its new EPR 2 reactor model. This approach applied to the piping consists, in principle, of not studying, in the demonstration of nuclear safety, the consequences of a ruptured pipe because that rupture is made extremely unlikely with a high degree of confidence. It is based on particularly demanding provisions in terms of the design, manufacture and in-service monitoring of these pipes.
