The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) has given EDF until March 2020 to determine whether, following an earthquake on 11 November, the electrician will have to reinforce his Cruas nuclear reactors (3, 7 GW) and Tricastin (3.7 GW). “The ASN will control the whole process and take a stand on this subject,” she said in a note on Thursday. The two nuclear sites, located near the epicenter of the earthquake in south-eastern France, were controlled after the magnitude 5.4 earthquake. The Cruas plant had stopped automatically but had not suffered damage, according to EDF, while the Tricastin power plant had been able to continue operating. Last month, IRSN, the technical arm of the ASN, noted that the earthquake had similar characteristics to those used to develop seismic safety standards for nuclear installations.
