Russia is to build the world’s first unarmed nuclear-powered submarine to search for oil and gas in the Arctic. It is part of Iceberg, a government project to devise underwater technologies to exploit the billions of barrels of hydrocarbons beneath the ocean off Russia’s northern coast. Similar in size to a military submarine, the new sub will be equipped with seismic scanners to seek out precious compounds and minerals in the seabed at depths of up to 400m.
