Finland-based nuclear waste management company Posiva has started the excavation of the final disposal tunnels for Onkalo, a nuclear waste repository in Olkiluoto, western Finland. After being granted verification from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland, Posiva has started excavating the project’s first five tunnels over the next 18 months. The works are part of the €500M (£430M) EKA project, which involves the construction of an encapsulation plant and an underground final disposal facility for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel. As such, the project and funding will cover all the final disposal facilities needed, including both construction and equipment, as well as the start of the final disposal operation in the first deposition tunnel.
