Residents of London and Edinburgh will be among the first in the UK to experience self-driving vehicles, after three new public trials of autonomous buses and taxis secured a share of £25m funding from the government yesterday. Leading brands such as Jaguar Land Rover, Addison Lee and Stagecoach, have joined with technology specialists such as Fusion Processing and Oxbotica and the universities of Nottingham, the West of England, and Edinburgh, to deliver the new projects. The pilot projects include a 14-mile bus service over the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh, deployment of four self-driving taxis in Greenwich, and an autonomous Land Rover fleet in London, all of which have secured backing from the £25m Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Intelligent Mobility Fund. The trials will assess both technical performance and include social behavioural research to explore how driverless technology can integrate into society.
