The government should force carmakers to produce more electric vehicles to prevent a bounce back in sales of petrol and diesel models as lockdown eases, a charity has warned. The charity Global Action Plan, which organises the annual campaign Clean Air Day, is calling for carmakers to be subject to a 15 per cent sales quota for electric vehicles. Increasing the supply of new zero emission vehicles to the market will cut waiting times and prices, it argues. Most carmakers now offer at least one or two electric models, but the industry has faced criticism for promoting gas-guzzling SUVs which are enjoying a sales boom.
