British Gas has launched a new electricity tariff designed especially for owners of electric cars, which allows them to take advantage of overnight drops in the cost of power to charge their cars at reduced cost. The energy giant claims its Green Drive tariff, which was announced yesterday, is the first in a range of new products aimed at electric vehicle (EV) owners. The dedicated tariff will allow EV owners access to cheaper rates of electricity between 12.30am and 7.30am, encouraging them to charge their cars during these hours. EVs are considerably cheaper to run than conventional cars, but they can push up a household’s average power consumption by as much as 80 per cent and as such access to lower cost power should help further strengthen the financial case for switching to EVs at the same time as reducing pressure on the grid.
