In its quest to phase out the use of fossil fuels in heat production, the state-owned Aalborg Energy Group (Aalborg Forsyning) has invested in a 35 MW electric boiler. The boiler will not only function as a reserve source during power outages but also reduce annual CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes. An electric boiler will allow us to produce district heating based on green energy instead of oil or gas, which was previously the case. In addition, an electric boiler will also allow us to sell services on the electricity market, so we will occasionally be able to convert electricity to district heating when there’s an overcapacity of electricity on the market from wind turbines, for example, Jesper Høstgaard-Jensen, director in Aalborg Heating explains.
