Businesses have called on the government to set an end date for the use of unabated gas in the electricity sector in the UK. In a letter penned to Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwarteng MP, the chief executive of 13 major businesses urged ministers to set a target of 2035. This would tie in with the target recently set by the Biden Administration in the US. The companies, which include the BT Group, Triodos Bank and WSP, said they stand ready to play their part in delivering fully decarbonised electricity by 2035.

Parliament ‘misled’ over cost of net zero target, say Conservative MPs. Parliament was “misled” over the cost of reaching the net zero target, Conservative MPs have said, as internal documents reveal that most small electric cars cost thousands of pounds more than officials claimed they would by 2021. Data obtained from the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the official advisory body, following a legal battle shows that ministers based their estimates of the overall cost of the policy on assumptions that included a claim that the cost of small electric cars would plummet to £13,000 by 2021. In fact, most cost at least £20,000. The disclosure comes amid serious concerns in the Treasury and among Tory backbenchers about the financial burden of the net zero target.

Chris Stark: This is drivel from the Sunday Telegraph, who have spent the last two weeks trying to argue that we’d made a glaring mistake in our Net Zero report from 2019. In reality we are meticulous. And the economy costs of electric vehicles have fallen since 2019.
