The effects of global warming are placing Scotland’s creaking sewers under huge strain, with thousands of floods triggered by bursts of intense rain. Scottish Water said climate change had brought heavier and more frequent storms that could overwhelm the Victorian-era sewerage network. More than 350 homes are at risk of sewer flooding. The quango has revealed that investigations are under way into 30 priority areas – including Glasgow, Prestwick, Coatbridge, Saltcoats and Montrose – where external sewer flooding could threaten schools, hospitals and homes. Officials admit, however, that costly upgrades in other parts of the country may not take place for years.
