Nuclear: tensions between EDF and China after the Taishan incident. The Chinese, who operate the only two EPRs in operation in the world, are not following the advice of their French partners. At the heart of China’s Taishan-1 nuclear reactor, one of only two EPRs in operation in the world, five fuel rods are leaking rare radioactive gases . The incident alone is not likely to cause a serious nuclear accident. It is nevertheless of concern to EDF and its subsidiary Framatome, which manufactures the fuel rods. Their Chinese partners CGN (EDF owns 30% of the Taishan plant) do not follow their advice to solve the problem and snub their requests for information. This file would probably have remained confined within the small secret world of Franco-Chinese nuclear power if CNN had not echoed it in an alarmist fashion on Monday, June 14. The American channel quotes a document given by Framatome to the American authorities on June 3 mentioning a problem on the Taishan site.
