Carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems will fail to take off in the UK unless a solution is found to protect companies from the risk of carbon leaking into the atmosphere decades later, a high-level executive at one of the UK’s largest industrial firms has warned. Jay Hambro, chief investment officer for the GFG Alliance – the international group of businesses owned by the billionaire Gupta family – said although the company “stands ready” to deploy CCS technologies, development is stalled because there is no commercial insurance solution to underwrite the long-term risks.
