One of the UK’s oldest nuclear power plants has been declared ‘safe’. Bradwell Nuclear Power Station, located next to the River Blackwater in the Maldon District, has now entered a safe state known as ‘care and maintenance’ (C&M) – the first in the country to do so. Both of the station’s reactor buildings have been defuelled, decommissioned and covered in weatherproof cladding to create ‘safestores’. All of the nuclear waste has been packaged and safely stored on the site for the next 70 years until it can be cleared for good. It is a major milestone in the clearance of the 60-year-old site, which stopped operating in 2002, and a celebration event was held at Steeple Village Hall in Southminster last Thursday (November 29) to mark the momentous occasion.
