The last of six giant doors has been fitted on to one of Sellafield’s most hazardous buildings. The pile fuel cladding silo is the oldest plant at the Cumbria site, where decommissioning is being carried out. It has been fitted with six 12.4-tonne stainless steel doors, which will provide an access point for waste retrieval machinery. Once structures to house them have been built alongside, removal is set to begin in 2020.
