Plans to build a new 400-MW pumped-storage hydro power plant in Dumfries-shire have been given the go ahead. The Glenmuckloch hydro project site – which previously operated as a surface coal mine – is being developed by Greenock-based 2020 Renewables. It will employ 15 full time workers when built, and will create more than 300 jobs during the construction phase. Pumped storage hydro-electricity stations have the capacity to store large quantities of energy, providing important flexibility in electricity supply when there is a greater proportion of electricity from renewable energy technologies.
