Kezia Dugdale, MSP, leader of the Labour Party in Scotland, today announced its opposition to shale gas exploration by use of ‘fracking’ technology. And she also warned that the SNP-led Scottish Government will ‘give the green light’ to fracking despite its current moratorium on shale gas exploration in Scotland pending the conclusion of independent scientific reports on whether ‘fracking’ can be safely carried out in Scotland.

Letter Robin Russell-Jones: It was extremely frustrating to read your editorial recycling the disingenuous argument that there is “still enormous potential for cutting carbon dioxide emissions by shifting power generation from coal to gas” (“Reinvention is needed to secure future for Big Oil”, February 29). It is disingenuous because other greenhouse gases, notably methane, will rise thus cancelling out any benefit to the climate from burning gas instead of coal. In evidence to the UK Climate Change Committee Professor Nick Cowern and I have reviewed all of the recent data on fugitive emissions from conventional and unconventional gas production and our findings should make sober reading for the fossil fuel industry.
