Shortly after Greg Jackson launched Octopus Energy as a new gas and electricity supplier, he was asked about his ambitions. “What’s my real vision? I want to be the Amazon of energy,” he told MPs three years ago at a select committee hearing. They laughed. These days, Octopus is being taken more seriously. Having set out to acquire 600,000 customers by 2021, it already supplies 1.4 million and is poaching thousands more from established rivals every week with its cut-price deals. Despite rapid growth, including six acquisitions, it has avoided the billing snafus that have plagued others. Today, Which?, the consumer group, is naming it the top supplier for customer satisfaction for a second year running.
