A federal budget proposal made by President Donald Trump for the Department of Energy could hike the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s funding to $403 million for fiscal year 2019. The potential increase would mark a $79 million boost in WIPP’s funding compared with enacted spending in FY 2017, while several infrastructure projects are ongoing at the site to increase air flow and continue to expand the facility’s underground nuclear waste repository. WIPP officials declined to comment on the proposed budget. Work on a redesigned ventilation system is expected to start by 2020, costing about $84.2 million, while a new ventilation shaft will cost about $1 million.
